Who we are

A referral line, not a local electrical company

Moore Power Electrical connects callers with electricians. We do not do electrical work ourselves.

We are not linked to any Anchorage business with a similar name, such as a company called Moore Electric or Moore Electrical Services.

You describe the job on one call. We pass it to an independent electrician who works in Anchorage. That electrician quotes the job, does the work and handles any warranty. The referral costs you nothing.

Repair or install

Home electrical repair and installation in Anchorage

Most Anchorage calls fall into two groups. Repairs fix something that stopped working. Installations add something new to the electrical system.

Repairs include dead outlets, tripping breakers, flickering lights, a warm switch plate and damage found after a power surge.

Installations include new circuits, lighting, garage and shop power, engine block heater outlets, panel replacements and wiring for a remodel.

Call (815) 456-4349 for either kind of job. We connect you with an electrician who takes urgent calls in Anchorage when one is available. If you see smoke, sparks or fire, leave the building and call 911 first.

Repair or new installation?

  • Repair: something worked before and now fails, trips or feels hot.
  • Installation: you want a new circuit, fixture, outlet or panel.
  • Both: an old panel that keeps failing often needs replacement, not repair.
  • Utility problem: a whole street is dark or a line is down. Call Chugach Electric.

Before work starts

How Alaska licenses electricians

Alaska uses two separate credentials for electrical work.

A certificate of fitness lets a person do the electrical work. The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Mechanical Inspection section, issues it. Types include journeyman, residential wireman and trainee. A trainee works under a journey-level electrician.

An electrical administrator license lets a person supervise and sign off on electrical work. The Department of Commerce, Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing, issues it. An electrical contractor registers as a specialty contractor with an electrical administrator assigned.

  1. 1. Ask for both numbersAsk for the contractor license number and the electrician's certificate of fitness.
  2. 2. Search the state databaseUse License Search on commerce.alaska.gov to check the contractor and administrator.
  3. 3. Confirm the certificateAsk to see the certificate card, or contact Mechanical Inspection at mi@alaska.gov.

  • Ask for the permit number and keep the final inspection record with your house papers.

Outages and earthquakes

Chugach Electric outages and earthquake checks

Chugach Electric serves most of Anchorage. It took over Municipal Light & Power in 2020, so former ML&P customers are now Chugach members. Homes in Eagle River and Chugiak get power from Matanuska Electric Association.

Call your utility when the whole street is dark, a line is down or the meter is damaged. Call an electrician when only part of your home has lost power.

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake on November 30, 2018 cut power across the Anchorage area. Shaking loosens connections, cracks conduit and shifts panels and meter bases.

After a strong quake

  • Smell for burning plastic near the panel and outlets.
  • Look for a meter base pulled away from the wall.
  • Check that the panel cover still sits flat and closed.
  • Keep a main breaker off if you see damage, and call an electrician.
  • Run a generator only through a transfer switch or approved interlock.

Winter loads

Cold weather and Anchorage wiring

Anchorage winters are long and cold. Heaters, heat tape and engine block heaters all run for hours at a time.

Long, heavy loads expose weak spots. A loose outlet or a tired breaker can run hot for months before it fails.

Outdoor outlets for block heaters need GFCI protection and in-use covers that close over a plugged-in cord.

Signs to call before deep winter

  • A breaker trips when a space heater or block heater runs
  • An outdoor outlet cover is cracked or missing
  • Lights dim when the furnace blower or a heater starts
  • A cord or plug feels warm after an overnight block heater run

Cost factors

What changes the cost of electrical work in Anchorage

The electrician sets the price and puts it in writing. We do not set or collect prices.

These factors move the price on most Anchorage jobs:

  • AccessFinished basements, crawlspaces and frozen ground change how long wiring takes.
  • Permit and inspectionPermitted jobs include Municipality fees and inspection visits.
  • Utility coordinationPanel and service changes need the utility to disconnect and reconnect power.
  • TimingUrgent, evening and weekend calls usually cost more than booked visits.
